BMI Introduction

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a person's weight in kilograms divided by the square of height in meters. BMI is an inexpensive and easy screening method for weight category—underweight, healthy weight, overweight, and obesity.

What is BMI?

BMI is a measurement of a person's leanness or corpulence based on their height and weight, and is intended to quantify tissue mass. It is widely used as a general indicator of whether a person has a healthy body weight for their height.

BMI Categories

  • Underweight: BMI is less than 18.5
  • Normal weight: BMI is 18.5 to 24.9
  • Overweight: BMI is 25 to 29.9
  • Obesity: BMI is 30 or more

Limitations of BMI

While BMI is a useful screening tool, it has limitations:

  • May overestimate body fat in athletes and others with muscular builds
  • May underestimate body fat in older persons and others who have lost muscle
  • Does not directly measure body fat
  • Does not account for factors like muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution

For Children and Teens

BMI is interpreted differently for children and teens, even though it is calculated using the same formula. BMI for children and teens compares their measurements against growth charts that take age and sex into account.
